Unique Vacations In Stornoway

Large numbers of people enjoy taking vacations in unusual places and more travelers are finding common seaside vacations far less appealing. The need to discover is ever and travel operators are incessantly looking for new vacation destinations or which offer something of unusual appeal. In the article below I examine Stornoway on the remote Hebridean island of Lewis and discuss the factors which help make this such a fantastic destination for a vacation.

Lewis

The Isle of Lewis, together with the Isle of Harris, is the biggest island in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles.  The islands is situated far from Scotland’s west coast further out from the island of Skye, needing a flight or ferry journey to get there. Due to the extreme remoteness it has only been during the last few decades that ordinary folk are able to access to the islands for a vacation, prior to this it was only the rich who could afford the enormous cost of the trip. The only other option to get to the  Western Isles was to arrive to seek employment.

Stornoway

Way back in the past the town of stornoway was an immensely busy fishing port. The main quarry of the fishing boats was herring and during the fishing season the population of Stornoway expanded from approximately five or six thousand to over thirty thousand. An amazing  number of Stornoway Hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts developed to meet the demands for lodging the incredible influx of temporary inhabitants created. Nowadays the population of Stornoway stays at a little over six thousand (not including visitors).

Unfortunately the herring industry heavily declined after WWI with the complete collapse of the Russian and German markets. You will still find a tiny fishing fleet in the town of Stornoway however there are few buildings remaining from that time and Stornoway lost a great deal of its charm and character during the redevelopment of the 1970’s.

In recent years the local council has enhanced, rather sympathetically, the town with several works of art on the theme of the herring industry as well as adding areas of flower beds and even fountains. New architecture are also more beautiful, such as An Lanntair, the local arts centre.

Although there are far fewer   Stornoway hotels in existence, just the Royal Hotel can be traced back to the heyday of the Herring industry, there are still a huge number of Stornoway bed and breakfasts, plus guest houses, inns and hostels. There is even a caravan park on the outskirts of town.
